Governor exhorts students to use their skills for rural development

One of the fastest growing economies of the world, India, was fast progressing in technical know-how and recent launch of satellite PSLV by ISRO bore testimony to this. The students trained technically must use their knowledge for the progress of the country, especially rural areas said the governor Baby Rani Maurya.

She was presiding at the 14th convocation ceremony of College of Engineering Roorkee on Tuesday. She exhorted the students to take the knowledge they have gained from the college, for making positive changes towards the betterment of the society and helping those who do not have the privileges, they have. Citing examples of some social organizations which were working towards bringing basic facilities of potable water and electricity in distant parts of the state, she encouraged the students not to forget their own land when they get opportunities afar in foreign lands. Be loyal to your own motherland, said the governor.

The Governor congratulated the toppers for bringing glory to their parents and teachers. She extolled the students to carry forward their legacy of environment conservation by tree plantation as started by chairman of college J C Jain.

At the opening of the convocation, the academic procession in ceremonial dress moved to Vardhaman Auditorium. Chairman COER J.C Jain said that it was a moment of pride for him and all the COERians to receive awards at the hands of Governor of Uttarkhand. A speech on the trends and progresses of COER was delivered by the Director General Dr. S P Gupta. Major General O P Soni said the college had completed 21 years of its glory, founded in 1998 and started working in 1999. It has developed rapidly in education and research area. He talked about academic development and growth activities at COER such as research grant sanctioned for various projects and national and international research papers published by COER faculties.

A total of 721 degrees were awarded to the students of Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical engineering, Aeronautical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, MCA and MBA and other streams.

Presiding as guest of honour, the Registrar, Uttarakhand Technical University, Dehradun congratulated the degree recipients and their parents on their achievements. In her address, she said that the students that they must continuously strive to find new ideas and creative ways of handling various situations. “Our country requires trained skilled technicians who can strengthen the backward system of the country. Today there is no shortage of human resources in our country but there is a scarcity of skilled human resources. So, quality is more important than quality. So, there is a need for ‘re-tooling and re-engineering’ everyday.” J. C. Jain and Sunita Jain Vice Chairperson COER, presented mementoes, to the governor and guest of honour.
